YAY! It’s Septemblog!

My rather lovely partner Jem has a long list of thirty things that she wants to do before she turns the ripe old age of thirty. Given that this event occurs near the start of January, she’s fast running out of time to Get. Stuff. Done.

One of the things on the list, as you’ll have no doubt spotted if you’ve bothered to click that link up there, is for her to write a blog post every day for a single month. Apparently, in her younger years she was quite a prolific blogger and gained quite a following, so you’d think that blogging every day for a month would pose no problem.

Nevertheless, she has asked her friends to join her in this endeavour as a means of drumming up support, and seeing as how a) I’m her partner, and b) I am absolutely, beyond appallingly bad at keeping this blog up to date, I figured I should probably have a stab at it myself. She’s calling this idea "Septemblog."*

So, what can I blog about? Well, a surprising amount – there’s always something going on, and usually it’s only my assumption that no-one would be interested in hearing about it that prevents me from spewing forth a mountain of words on to the screen.

One idea would be for me to write an in-depth review of every car I’ve ever owned, which would take me up to September 23rd (not including today) – but that’s a bit of a cop out, and I’m not entirely sure I could summon the enthusiasm to write an in-depth review about the death trap Ford Fiesta Popular Plus that my Dad bought for me as a 17th birthday present. I expect there will be a few car-related posts along the way, though.

Video games are also another popular topic, and with some nice releases in September and Coming Soonâ„¢ there’s probably some stuff to be going on with there – and that’s not even counting the game that I’m working on myself. (No, it’s not another Alien Pong Trilogy – Ed.)

There’ll be tales of terror as I come to terms with moving out of my own house and into a house filled with the laughter and pitter-patter of tiny feet, something of an alien concept to me but one I’ve had to get rapidly acquainted with.

I’m sure I’ll think of other stuff to go along with it, but hopefully there’ll be nothing too clickbait-y and certainly nothing too Daily Mail-y.

Wish me luck!

* I originally suggested that she call it "Blog September", but then realised that this would be a little bit too close to "Black September" and would therefore be a constant reminder of the terrorist incident that took place at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, a topic that I’ve had a morbid fascination with since hearing of it when I was a teenager, but not really suitable for a lighthearted blogging escapade.

An outing to Chirk Castle

I first visited Chirk Castle (near the Welsh border, not too far from home) during primary school, although I don’t remember much about this particular trip other than my Dad telling me a story about the red hand symbol that appears on the front gates and how that symbol came to be used (a story I’ve not been able to corroborate from other sources, so could well be complete hogwash – but never mind, eh?)

I went back there in around 2008 on a whim and found it to be a truly fascinating place with wonderful gardens and great opportunities for an amateur photographer bod like myself, and I now make a point to go back there at least once a year – mainly just to chill out in the grounds, but sometimes to take some new photos.

I went today with Jem, and somewhat ironically of the photos that I took (and present to you above) there aren’t any of the Castle itself. I did take quite a few, but they all look a bit “meh” so I’ve not bothered selecting them for display here.

I was also quite surprised to find that a couple of new areas had been opened up in the Castle state rooms, places I’d not been in before. In some of these rooms were seats that did not have holly placed on them – meaning that they can be sat on if desired. Despite this, most of the seats in question looked rather old and it irrationally bothered me that people were sitting on them, rather than just leaving them be.

Anyway, enjoy the photos! I’ll no doubt go back next year (or perhaps even again this year if the weather allows)

My Old Game Reviews

I’ve been programming these computer-ma-whatsits since the tender age of 6, when my Dad brought home from work a Sinclair Spectrum 48K.

Well, I say that, but my time with that machine was somewhat limited as I had two brothers living at home then as well, Bob and Mike, and they were even more interested in this alien bit of kit than I was, both of them being nearly 10 years older than I was.

Nevertheless, that lovely old squidgeboard was my introduction to the world of computer programming. 48K Sinclair BASIC isn’t exactly a powerhouse of a language, but it was more than enough for my tiny brain.

I never really managed to do anything particularly great with it though – it was only after I’d migrated to the Commodore Amiga that I started really digging my teeth into the biscuit that was creating my own computer programs. Initially I used AMOS BASIC, followed by AMOS Professional, and ended up using Blitz Basic 2.

Using AMOS/AMOS Pro, I created a number of games for the Amiga that I released on Aminet in the mid-to-late 90s. At the time, I was a subscriber to Amiga Format, and they ran a seemingly popular “Reader Games” segment – kind of like Readers’ Wives, but (certainly the first couple of times) making myself look more of a tit. Naturally I submitted my games for review in this magazine section.

I present these reviews to you now, for you to make up your own mind. They’re in the order of publication.

getaddrinfo failed: A non-recoverable error occurred during a database lookup.

I faced an interesting (and by interesting, I mean incredibly frustrating) issue with a client yesterday, who had installed a PHP-based application of mine on their new Windows 7 laptop only to find that it was unable to connect to the MySQL database that powered it.

Hotel Review: Sandford House Hotel

Another odd review this, but (unlike my Silverton review the other day) not because of the experience I had. In this case, it’s more because this hotel is in the town I live in, and there’s probably not many people that have stayed in a hotel in their own town.

Restaurant Review: The Silverton Hotel, Shrewsbury

This is going to be a bit of a weird review, primarily because I’ve been to The Silverton many times before and although the quality of their food has gone downhill in recent times (but don’t get me wrong – it’s still good stuff) I’ve never felt compelled to write a review of the place until now, and this isn’t going to be a glowing report.

Adventures with DVD ripping

Those who know me will know that I’m a bit of a cinephile. I love my movies. There’s not much I’d rather do of a Friday/Saturday evening than chill out with a takeaway on the sofa and watch a movie or two.

Consequently, over the years I’ve amassed quite a big collection of DVDs. About 550, to give you a rough guess.

My 15 minutes of fame…

Following on from my previous post, where I showcased a bit of aerial footage that I took of the floods in Frankwell on Boxing Day last year, I went out with my new quadcopter setup* in early February as we continued to have ridiculous levels of rainfall, and Frankwell became even more of a flood plain.

Shrewsbury Floods, Christmas 2013

Heavy rain and wind storms saw various parts of Shrewsbury town centre hit by flooding over Christmas, although not to the extent that we’ve seen in previous years.

Naturally, I took my DJI Phantom out to record some video…

The experiment does continue…

Despite the large length of time between updates, my betting experiment does continue – so far I’ve not actually won anything (shock!) but I’ve got another four bets to do to meet the requirements of the original scheme.

The last update saw me putting bets on various Champions League matches – and funnily enough, I got 3 out of the 4 results correct – it was only Manchester United drawing with Shakhtar Donetsk that cost me the win on that occasion.

After that, it was bets on four international matches (I think they were friendlies, but I can’t remember for sure) and again, it was 3 out of 4 correct.

I then deviated from the pattern slightly and placed six bets on a single accumulator. This time, I got 4 correct.

I have since left it for a bit while I concentrate on other things, but the remaining four bets will be concluded in the New Year – where I hope to actually bloody win something.
