Shrewsbury Abbey

Shrewsbury Abbey was founded in 1083 and was built on the site of a wooden Saxon Church. The Rule of St. Benedict was followed there for 457 years by a community of monks, with the church at the centre of a daily routine of prayers, studies, and manual labour.

Home to the fictional character of Brother Cadfael, the Abbey attracts thousands of tourist visitors every year. Coupled with its interesting history, and its near-destruction by road pioneer Thomas Telford, a visit to Shrewsbury is not complete without seeing this magnificent structure.

This view of the Church was taken from directly in front of the entrance. The Church Tower looks somewhat frightening from this angle. The front of the Church is bathed in floodlighting during the hours of darkness, giving the building an even more impressive look.
